Nage-Waza-Ura-no-Kata

Nage-Waza-Ura-no-Kata (投業裏の形) translates to "Forms of Reversing Throwing Techniques." This kata focuses on counter-attacks to various throwing techniques in judo. Unlike the Gonosen-no-kata, which also deals with counter techniques, Nage-Waza-Ura-no-Kata is considered superior due to its formal structure and the expertise of its creator, Mifune Kyūzō.

History

The kata was developed by Mifune Kyūzō, a renowned judo master, likely between 1934 and 1938 Kōdōkan Jūdō’s three orphaned forms of counter techniques. Mifune's inspiration for this kata can be traced back to his time at Waseda University, where he was influenced by Takahashi Kazuyoshi's research on reverse-throws (ura-waza). The kata was designed to complement the Nage-no-kata and to help judokas develop advanced technical abilities.
