Tsuri Goshi (釣腰), also known as the "Lifting Hip Throw," is one of the original 40 throws of Judo developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the third group, Sankyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. Tsuri Goshi is classified as a hip technique (Koshi-waza).

Technique

Tsuri Goshi involves breaking the opponent's posture at the hips, gripping the belt, lifting them onto your hips, and throwing them over. The technique is executed as follows:

  1. Grip: The tori (the person executing the throw) grips the uke (the person being thrown) by the back of the belt through the uke's left armpit with the right hand.
  2. Positioning: Both tori and uke start in the right natural posture. The tori steps back with the left foot, then the right foot, pulling the uke forward and slightly pressing down to break their balance.
  3. Lifting: The tori drops their hips to the level of the uke's thighs, then raises them again while pulling with both hands to lift the uke onto their hips.
  4. Throwing: The tori continues the lifting motion and turns their body to throw the uke over their hips, completing the throw.

Key Points

  • The tori must ensure that the uke's balance is broken forward or to the right front corner.
  • The lifting motion should be smooth and coordinated with the pulling action of the hands.
  • Proper hip placement is crucial for the effectiveness of the throw.
