Ura Nage (裏投げ), or "Rear Throw," is a powerful Judo technique where tori (the person executing the throw) throws uke (the person being thrown) backward using a combination of hip action and leverage from tori's own backward fall. It is classified as a Sutemi-Waza (sacrifice technique), specifically under the Ma-Sutemi-Waza (rear sacrifice techniques), where Tori sacrifices their upright position by falling backward to execute the throw.

Classification

Ura Nage belongs to the Ma-Sutemi-Waza category, meaning it is a rear sacrifice technique. Tori uses uke’s forward momentum to throw them over their head or shoulder while falling backward. This technique relies on timing, strength, and proper positioning, making it a powerful counter to forward attacks like Seoi Nage or Harai Goshi.

Technique Breakdown

  1. Uke begins by attacking with a forward throw, such as Seoi-nage or Harai-goshi, where they commit their body weight forward.
  2. Tori counters by stepping in close and securing a grip around uke's waist or upper body, pulling uke’s hips close to their own.
  3. Tori then falls backward, using their hips to lift uke while pulling them over their body.
  4. Uke is thrown backward, often in a high-arching motion, landing on their back as tori stays low or lands on the mat with control.

Key Points for Beginners

  • Kuzushi and timing are crucial. Ura Nage works best as a counter when uke is already off-balance and moving forward with momentum. Tori must time the throw precisely to capitalize on uke’s forward movement.
  • Stay close to uke. You need to keep uke’s body close to your own to effectively lift them with your hips and guide them over your head or shoulder.
  • Engage your hips. The power in Ura Nage comes from your hips, not just your arms. Use your lower body to lift and throw uke while you fall backward.
  • Uke should practice good ukemi (falling technique) by tucking their chin and slapping the mat to safely absorb the impact of the fall. This is essential, as Ura Nage often results in a fast and high-impact fall.

Common Mistakes

  • Not pulling uke close enough. If there’s too much space between you and uke, it will be difficult to lift them effectively, and the throw may fail.
  • Falling backward too early. Make sure uke is fully committed to their forward attack before you initiate the backward fall. If timed incorrectly, you can lose control.
  • Focusing only on the arms. Many beginners try to power through the throw with their upper body. Remember to use your hips and legs to create the necessary lift.

Application in Training

Ura Nage is often used as a counter to aggressive forward throws in both Randori (free practice) and Shiai (competition). It teaches students how to redirect an opponent’s attack and turn it into a powerful throw. This technique is also featured in the Nage-no-kata as an example of rear sacrifice throwing techniques.
