Tani Otoshi (谷落), or "Valley Drop," is one of the original 40 throws of Judo developed by Jigoro Kano. It is part of the third group, Sankyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a rear sacrifice technique (Ma-Sutemi-Waza).
Concept
Tani Otoshi involves the tori (the person executing the throw) using their leg to block the uke's (the person being thrown) legs while pulling them backward, resulting in both the tori and uke falling. This technique uses the opponent's momentum against them, guiding them to the ground with deceptive ease.
Technique
- Grip: The tori grips the uke's sleeve and collar.
- Positioning: The tori steps to the side and slightly behind the uke, breaking their balance backward.
- Blocking and Pulling: The tori places their leg behind both of the uke's legs while pulling the uke backward.
- Throwing: The tori falls sideways, using the leg to block and the hands to pull the uke down.
Key Points
- Break the uke's balance backward.
- Coordinate the blocking motion with the pulling action.
- Ensure the blocking leg is positioned correctly behind the uke's legs.
