De Ashi Harai (出足払), also known as the "Advanced Foot Sweep," is a fundamental Judo technique classified under Ashi-Waza (foot techniques). It is one of the original 40 throws developed by Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, and is included in the current 67 throws of Kodokan Judo.
Description
De Ashi Harai is executed by sweeping the opponent's foot at the moment they are about to place their weight on it. The technique involves precise timing and balance breaking (kuzushi). The practitioner (tori) uses their foot to sweep the opponent's (uke) foot from the rear, side, or front, causing them to lose balance and fall.
Key Points
- Kuzushi: Breaking the opponent's balance forward or sideways.
- Timing: Executing the sweep just before the opponent's foot touches the ground.
- Sweep: Using the sole of the foot to sweep the opponent's foot.
Counters
- Tai Otoshi: A counter throw that can be used if the sweep is anticipated.
- Uchi Mata: Another counter that involves lifting the opponent's leg.
- Tsubame Gaeshi: Countering a De-Ashi Hara with another De Ashi Harai
