Makikomi

From Red River Judo

Makikomi (巻込) is a term used in Judo to describe a category of throwing techniques where the practitioner (tori) wraps or coils their body around the opponent (uke) to execute the throw. These techniques are part of the sutemi-waza (sacrifice techniques) class, where the tori sacrifices their balance to throw the uke.

Types of Makikomi

There are several variations of Makikomi techniques, each with its unique application and execution. Here are some examples of Makikomi style techniques:

  • Soto Makikomi (外巻込) - Outer wraparound throw, where the tori wraps around the uke from the outside.
  • Uchi Makikomi (内巻込) - Inner wraparound throw, where the tori wraps around the uke from the inside.
  • Hane Makikomi (跳巻込) - Springing wraparound throw, involving a springing motion to wrap around the uke.
  • Uchi Mata Makikomi (内股巻込) - Inner thigh wraparound throw, combining the inner thigh throw with a wrapping motion.

Technique Description

In Makikomi techniques, the tori typically uses their body to entangle the uke, creating leverage to execute the throw. The tori often sacrifices their own balance, falling to the mat alongside the uke to complete the throw. This category of techniques is effective in both competitive Judo and self-defense scenarios due to the control and leverage they provide.

Applications

Makikomi techniques are versatile and can be applied in various situations, including:

  • Countering an opponent's attack
  • Transitioning from other throws
  • Utilizing the opponent's momentum against them
