Kuzure Kesa Gatame (崩袈裟固), also known as the "Modified Scarf Hold" or "Broken Scarf Hold," is one of the mat holds (Osaekomi-waza) of Kodokan Judo. In grappling terms, it is categorized as a side control hold.
Technique Description
Kuzure Kesa Gatame involves controlling the opponent from the side, facing towards their head. The practitioner (tori) wraps an arm around the uke's shoulder and uses their body weight to pin the opponent to the mat. A key variation from the standard Kesa Gatame is the positioning of the tori's arm underhooking the far shoulder, rather than wrapping the head and grabbing the collar.
Applications
This technique is commonly used in both competitive Judo and self-defense scenarios. It can be transitioned into from various throws and is effective in maintaining control over the opponent while setting up for submissions.
