Kodomo-No-Kata - Unit 7

Youth 12th Class Jūnikyū (White/Yellow) Exam

This unit demonstrates foundational Judo movements and breakfalls.

Bowing In

See also: Formal Bow
  • Ritsu-rei: Standing bow facing Shomen.
  • Za-rei: Kneeling bow between Uke and Tori.

Ukemi-Waza (Breakfalls)

  • Ushiro-ukemi:
    • Lie on your back, tuck your chin, and slap the mat twice.
    • Sit up, extend arms and legs, and perform a backward breakfall (twice).
  • Yoko-ukemi:
    • Lie on your back with hands and feet pointing upward.
    • Perform a breakfall to the right and left sides.
  • Outen-ukemi:
    • Transition onto hands and knees.
    • Execute a side roll into a breakfall (twice per side).

Tai-sabaki & Ashi-sabaki (Movement)

  • Mae-Sabaki / Ushiro-Sabaki
  • Ayumi-ashi:
    • Move three steps forward, then three steps backward.

Ayumi-Ashi

  • Tsugi-ashi:
    • Move side to side toward Shomen.

Tsugi-Ashi

Tachi-Waza (Throws)

  • Mae-sabaki throw:
    • Uke drops to knees.
    • Tori grips and executes Mae-Sabaki movement, Uke falls to the side.
    • Performed on both right and left sides.
  • Ushiro-sabaki throw:
    • Uke kneels with right knee up, offering right arm.
    • Tori grabs arm with both hands and performs Ushiro-Sabaki throw.
    • Performed on both right and left sides.


Bowing Out

  • Za-rei: Kneeling bow between Uke and Tori.
  • Ritsu-rei: Standing bow facing Shomen.
