Kodomo-No-Kata - Unit 7

The 7th unit within the Kodomo No Kata demonstrates that a student understands the very basics of Judo, including introductory movements and breakfalls

Bowing in

Ritsu-rei and Za-rei
A standing bow, facing Shomen
A kneeling bow with Uke and Tori facing each other.

Ukemi-Waza

Ushiro-ukemi
Both Students lay on their back, tuck their chins, and then slap the mat, while tucking their chin, 2 times.
Both students then sit up, with their legs and arms extended and then do a break fall back, with their feet pointing straight up.

This is done twice.

Yoko-ukemi
Both Students then lay on their back, with their feet and hands pointed straight up, they will then do a breakfall to the right and left side.
Outen-ukemi
Students will then transition onto their hands and knees.

Students do a side roll into a break fall.
This is done twice on the right side and the left side

Tai-sabaki & Ashi-sabaki

Ushiro-ukemi
Mae-Sabaki
Ushiro-Sabaki
Ayumi-ashi


- With basic Kumi-Kata grips
- Moving Forward and Backward > Three Steps forward and three steps backward

Tsugi-ashi


- With basic Kumi-Kata grips
- Movement is done side to side, moving toward Shomen first.

Tachi-Waza

Throwing by Mae-sabaki
- Uke drops to knees

- Tori takes a Basic Kumi-Kata
- Tori executes a Mae-Sabaki movement and Uke takes a side fall
- Executed on Right and Left Side

Throwing by Ushiro-sabaki
- Uke moves to a position with the right knee up and offers the right arm

- Tori takes the arm in both hands and executes an Ushiro-sabaki throwing the Uke with both hands.
- Executed on Right and Left side.

Bowing Out

Za-rei and Ritsu-rei
A kneeling bow with Uke and Tori facing each other.
A standing bow, facing Shomen

Unit 7 Demonstration
