Kodomo-No-Kata - Unit 7

This unit demonstrates foundational Judo movements and breakfalls.

Ukemi-Waza (Falling Techniques)

Technique Description
Ushiro-ukemi (Backward Ukemi) Both students lay on their backs, tuck their chins, and slap the mat twice.


Then sit up with legs and arms extended, fall back into a breakfall with feet pointing straight up. Repeated twice.

Yoko-ukemi (Side Ukemi) Both students lay on their back with their hands and feet pointing upward.


Students perform breakfalls to both the right and left sides with hands and feet pointed up.

Outen-ukemi (Rolling Ukemi) From hands and knees (turtle position), students perform a side roll into a breakfall. This is done once in each direction.

Sabaki (Movement Drills)

Movement Description
Tai-sabaki Practice turning the body to evade or redirect force.
Ashi-sabaki Practice footwork patterns to move efficiently and maintain balance.
Mae-sabaki Forward entry movement, often used to close distance or enter for a throw.
Ushiro-sabaki Backward movement, maintaining posture and spacing while retreating.
Ayumi-ashi Move three steps forward, then three steps back. Tori and Uke should move in coordinated sequence.
Tsugi-ashi Side-stepping movement (three steps each direction), coordinated with partner. Movement begins toward Shomen.

Nage-Waza (Throwing Techniques)

Throwing Techniques
Throw Description
Mae-sabaki throw Uke drops to their knees. Tori takes basic Kumi-kata grip and performs a Mae-sabaki movement. Uke performs a side fall. Executed on both right and left sides.
Ushiro-sabaki throw Uke kneels with right knee up and offers the right arm.

Tori takes the arm with both hands and throws Uke using Ushiro-sabaki movement. Executed on both right and left sides.

Bowing Out Procedures
Position Description
Za-rei A kneeling bow with Uke and Tori facing each other.
Ritsu-rei A standing bow, facing Shomen.


Bowing In

  • Ritsu-rei: Standing bow facing Shomen.
  • Za-rei: Kneeling bow between Uke and Tori.

Ukemi-Waza (Breakfalls)

  • Ushiro-ukemi:
    • Lie on your back, tuck your chin, and slap the mat twice.
    • Sit up, extend arms and legs, and perform a backward breakfall (twice).
  • Yoko-ukemi:
    • Lie on your back with hands and feet pointing upward.
    • Perform a breakfall to the right and left sides.
  • Outen-ukemi:
    • Transition onto hands and knees.
    • Execute a side roll into a breakfall (twice per side).

Tai-sabaki & Ashi-sabaki (Movement)

  • Mae-Sabaki / Ushiro-Sabaki
  • Ayumi-ashi:
    • Move three steps forward, then three steps backward.

Ayumi-Ashi

  • Tsugi-ashi:
    • Move side to side toward Shomen.

Tsugi-Ashi

Tachi-Waza (Throws)

  • Mae-sabaki throw:
    • Uke drops to knees.
    • Tori grips and executes Mae-Sabaki movement, Uke falls to the side.
    • Performed on both right and left sides.
  • Ushiro-sabaki throw:
    • Uke kneels with right knee up, offering right arm.
    • Tori grabs arm with both hands and performs Ushiro-Sabaki throw.
    • Performed on both right and left sides.


Bowing Out

  • Za-rei: Kneeling bow between Uke and Tori.
  • Ritsu-rei: Standing bow facing Shomen.
