The "Zarei" (Seated bow) is performed from a formal sitting posture. In judo, the phrase "Rei ni hajimari, rei ni owaru" (Beginning and ending with a bow of respect) emphasizes the importance of respect, expressed through dojo bows before and after practice sessions or bouts.

To perform a Zarei, stand with a straight back, then move into a kneeling posture by stepping the left leg back and lowering the left knee to the floor. Bring the right knee down, sit on your spread knees with hands on your thighs (thumbs inside), and keep your back straight. Place both hands on the floor in front of your knees, with elbows out, and bow forward until your head is 30 centimeters from the floor. Women traditionally perform this bow with both knees together.
