Utsuri Goshi (移腰), or "Changing Hip Throw" or "Shifting Hip Throw", is one of the original 40 throws of Judo developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the fourth group, Yonkyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a hip technique (Koshi-Waza).

Concept

Utsuri Goshi involves the tori (the person executing the throw) lifting the uke (the person being thrown) onto their hips and then switching hips mid-air to complete the throw. This technique is often used as a counter to an opponent's hip throw attempt.

Technique

  1. Grip: The tori grips the uke's sleeve and collar.
  2. Positioning: The tori bends their knees to block the uke's hip throw attempt.
  3. Lifting and Switching: The tori lifts the uke onto their hips and then switches hips mid-air.
  4. Throwing: The tori twists their body to throw the uke over the switched hip.

Key Points

  • Counter the uke's hip throw attempt by blocking and lifting.
  • Ensure the hip switch is smooth and coordinated.
  • Maintain control of the uke throughout the lift and throw.

Importance

Utsuri Goshi teaches judokas the importance of adaptability and using body mechanics to their advantage. It emphasizes the principle of "maximum efficiency with minimum effort." Mastery of this throw enhances a judoka's versatility in both offense and defense.
