Sukui Nage (掬投), or "Scooping Throw," is one of the original 40 throws of Judo developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the fourth group, Yonkyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a hand technique (Te-Waza).

Concept

Sukui Nage involves the tori (the person executing the throw) using their hands to scoop the uke's (the person being thrown) legs out from under them while rotating their upper body to the ground. This technique is effective for countering an opponent's forward momentum or when they are retreating.

Technique

  1. Grip: The tori grips the uke's legs from the side.
  2. Positioning: The tori steps deeply behind the uke with one leg, making close contact with their side.
  3. Scooping and Lifting: The tori uses one arm to reach in front of the uke to grab the far leg and the other hand to grab the near leg.
  4. Throwing: The tori scoops the uke's legs out while turning towards the uke and pushing them backward.

Key Points

  • Break the uke's balance backward.
  • Ensure the scooping motion is coordinated with the lifting action.
  • Maintain close contact with the uke to control their movement.

Importance

Sukui Nage teaches judokas the importance of using their body mechanics and leverage to their advantage. It emphasizes the principle of "maximum efficiency with minimum effort." Mastery of this throw enhances a judoka's versatility in both offense and defense.
