Harai Goshi Gaeshi is a counter technique in Judo, classified under Ashi-waza (foot techniques). It is one of the techniques adopted later by the Kodokan into their Shinmeisho No Waza (newly accepted techniques) list.

Description

Harai Goshi Gaeshi is performed as a counter to an opponent's Harai Goshi (hip sweep). When the opponent (Uke) attempts a right Harai Goshi, the defender (Tori) counters by hooking their left leg around Uke's lower left leg from behind and reaping it to throw Uke.

Steps

  1. Uke attacks with a right Harai Goshi.
  2. Tori shifts their weight and hooks their left leg around Uke's lower left leg from behind.
  3. Tori reaps Uke's leg, using the momentum to throw Uke.
