Harai Goshi Gaeshi is a counter technique in Judo, classified under Ashi-waza (foot techniques). It is one of the techniques adopted later by the Kodokan into their Shinmeisho No Waza (newly accepted techniques) list.
Description
Harai Goshi Gaeshi is performed as a counter to an opponent's Harai Goshi (hip sweep). When the opponent (Uke) attempts a right Harai Goshi, the defender (Tori) counters by hooking their left leg around Uke's lower left leg from behind and reaping it to throw Uke.
Steps
- Uke attacks with a right Harai Goshi.
- Tori shifts their weight and hooks their left leg around Uke's lower left leg from behind.
- Tori reaps Uke's leg, using the momentum to throw Uke.
