Ude-Hishigi-Ashi-Gatame (腕挫脚固), commonly referred to as Ashi-Gatame, is one of the official 29 grappling techniques of Kodokan Judo. It is classified under the Kansetsu-waza (joint techniques) category.
Description
Ashi-Gatame is a joint lock technique that targets the opponent's elbow joint. The technique involves using the legs to immobilize and apply pressure to the opponent's arm, thereby extending and controlling the elbow joint. This technique is typically executed from a position where the practitioner is beside or over the opponent.
Execution
To perform Ashi-Gatame:
- From a side position, the practitioner hooks their leg around the opponent's forearm.
- The practitioner's body weight is then used to apply pressure, extending the opponent's arm and locking the elbow joint.
- The technique can be applied from various positions, including when the opponent is face down or on their back.
Application in Competition
Ashi-Gatame is a versatile technique used in both competitive Judo and self-defense. It is effective in controlling and submitting an opponent by targeting the elbow joint, making it a valuable technique in a judoka's repertoire.
